FA Vase Cup 3rd Round Replay

Date:  Wednesday 6th December 2017

KO:  7.45pm

Venue:  Butts Park Arena

Attendance:  205

Well hello one and all. After that epic encounter With Bromsgrove Sporting last Saturday, we tonight welcome Sporting to the Butts Park Arena to contest the replay to see who will advance into the next round with an away tie against Wisbech Town in the last 32.

Another enthralling contest awaits us I'm sure and although United played exceptionally well defensively, tonight they will definitely have to show their attacking capabilities if they are to progress any further in this competition. United Manager Terry Anderson and his staff will no doubt be aware of that and set their team up accordingly.

The  referee gets the game under way and  BSFC get off to a great start when the win a corner in the 4th minute. It's taken by the No8 Robbie Bunn and his floated in cross is turned into the back of the net by the head of the No2 Guy Clark.

UNITED 0 BSFC 1

Now that's not the start United were hoping for. They now need to look to get straight back in the game. They struggle to do just that as BSFC force a succession of corners that are all easily dealt with by United over the 9 minutes. It takes until the 15th minute for United to create their first chance at goal. A Lewis Rankin free kick sees captain Chris Cox head just over the bar.

Soon after BSFC are back pressing United hard. They too force a couple of corners that sees one of them taken by the No3 Josh Quaynor and the No10 Richard Gregory glides in to coolly side foot the ball past United keeper Richard Morris to increase their lead in the 17th minute.

UNITED 0 BSFC 2

That's a disaster for United, 2-0 down inside 20 minutes and are struggling to get out of their own half. BSFC continue to dominate the game and more chances follow when in the 32nd minute they break forward with a long punt up field. The No10 Richard Gregory latches onto it before shooting, but fortunately it's cleared off the line by Chris Cox. The first booking of the game goes to United's Chris Cox for his challenge in the 33rd minute with the resulting free kick being gathered well at his near post by Richard Morris.

It’s not long though before United's Kyle Barnett joins him in the book for a similar challenge in the 38th minute. The resulting free kick is taken by the No9 Jason Cowley just outside the area. His shot goes towards goal and gets a slight deflection before nestling in the back of the net for a third BSFC goal that will surely seal the fate of United.

UNITED 0 BSFC 3

Well it looks like game over now after that goal. With the first half nearly up, BSFC still have time to create another chance when a corner taken by the No8 Robbie Bunn had to be tipped over the bar by the keeper Richard Morris in the 44th minute. Soon after the referee blows up for half time.

Second Half

The second half gets under way with neither side making any chances during the break. It's United though that come out looking the more threatening in the early exchanges. They force a couple of corners that come to nothing and from a long Bobby Moseley throw in, Craig Reid turns and stabs the ball goalwards but the keeper Reece Francis is on hand to pull off a great save to deny him in the 54th minute.

United decide to make their first change of the night when they take off Mitchell Piggon and send on Aaron Opoku in the 55th minute. United continue to press as they look to try and get back in the game. BSFC seem to have settled for their 3-0 lead and are looking to see the game out. United's Brad jones goes into the book for a tackle on BSFC's Jason Cowley.

The 65th minute sees United make another change when they take off Tommy Glasscoe and send on Aron Wint. United continue to up the corner count but fail to make any of them pay. Their best chance of the game so far falls to them in the 71st minute when Lewis Rankin shoots just over the bar from a tight angle after a Craig Reid deep cross.

The 76th minute sees both teams make changes with United taking off Bobby Moseley and sending on Robert Prinzel and BSFC taking off the No7 Wade Malley and sending on the No15 Connor Deards.

More United pressure sees them win a free kick out wide on the right. Lewis Rankin takes the kick and as the ball drops into the area, Chris Cox runs across the ball letting it go past him as it deceives the BSFC keeper Reece Francis and nestles into the back of the net for what surely is a consolation goal for United in the 79th minute.

UNITED 1 BSFC 3

A glimmer of hope but with only 10 minutes to go that a bit of a tall order even for United. United up the ante and go looking for another. United's Aaron Opoku does well to cross the ball in for Craig Reid but his shot is superbly saved by the keeper Reece Francis in the 81st minute. BSFC decide to make another change in the 88th minute when they take off the No10 Richard Gregory and send on the No17 Richard Richards.

We are now into the last two minutes and United win a free kick just outside the area. Jack Jeys takes it and the ball clips a BSFC defenders head and powers into the back of the net for an own goal and United have reduced the arrears to one goal in the 89th minute.

UNITED 2 BSFC 3

Surely not, they can't can they?? The game is now well into added time and United force a couple of late corners. The second one comes in and after a goalmouth scramble the ball is forced over the line for the equaliser in the 90+4 minutes but who scored it remains a mystery at the minute but who cares.

UNITED 3 BSFC 3

Would you believe it. United are back in the game and straight after the start the referee blows up for full time and for the second time in 5 days we have extra time to settle this tie.

Full Time

UNITED 3 BSFC 3

Extra time 1st period

Extra time begins and United waste no time in forcing the issue. They seem to have gotten stronger as the game as gone on. A Jack Jeys effort goes straight to the keeper Reece Francis from a Aaron Opoku lay off in the 92ns minute. Another United attack sees Aaron opoku put through but his shot to possibly win his team the tie smashes of the post and Jack jeys sends the rebound into the side netting.

BSFC decide to make their final change in the 100th minute when they take off the No11 Reece Hewitt and send on the No14 John Pykett. That soon after bought an end to the 1st period.

Extra time 2nd period

United soon get at BSFC from the off and a Chris Cox header goes just over the bar in the 109th minute. Then Aaron Opoku did really well to run with the ball evading a couple of players before sending his shot just over the bar in the 113th minute. Aaron Opoku is soon involved again when he turns provider and sets up Jack Jeys. Jack turns sharply before seeing his shot superbly saved by the keeper Reece Francis 114th minute. The final chance of the game falls to United in the 119th minute. A Craig Reid corner picks out Robert Prinzel who then sees his powerful header magnificently saved by the keeper Reece Francis before the referee blows up for full time and now its penalties.

BSFC win 4-3 on penalties.

In summing up this game I would to say it was A CLASSIC GAME OF TWO HALVES. It turned out to be another epic battle that tested both teams to their limits. BSFC started the game confidently and continued where they left off on Saturday by seeing plenty of the ball. They raced into an early lead going 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and increased that lead further just before half time. BSFC were lethal in their approach and United had no answers on how to combat that rarely threatened BSFC's goal at all in the whole of the first half.

The second half in contrast saw United up the ante and start to apply some concerted pressure of their own. Their persistence finally paid off in a dramatic final 10minutes plus added time where United pulled off a very unlikely comeback by scoring 3 late goals to force the game into extra time. Extra time saw United continued to force the issue looking for that unlikely winner and almost got it in the 1st period of extra time when Aaron Opoku hit the post from close range.

The game then had to be decided on the proverbial penalties to which BSFC managed to hold their nerve and run out eventual 4-3 winners to take the tie and progress into the next round.

Players worthy of a mention would have to be BSFC's keeper Reece Francis. Francis had to make a string of fantastic saves to keep his team in the driving seat. If it was not for him United would have completed a remarkable comeback and finish the game comfortable winners as BSFC failed to register a single shot either on target or off during the second half and extra time so well played Reece Francis.

For United, after their disastrous first half showing they came out in the second and buckled down. They started to create plenty of chances and when it looked like time was running out they managed to force the game into extra time with 3 late goals. Captain Chris Cox did well in the centre of defence alongside Mr consistent Kyle Barnett. Craig Reid also held the ball up well and his intelligent stroke play created many of United's chances that contributed to the dramatic comeback. For me though tonight's man of the match goes to Aaron Opoku. Aaron came on in the 55th minute and took his chance with a great performance that caused BSFC problems at will. His powerful running with the ball had the BSFC defence on the back foot on many occasions and was very unlucky not to seal an unlikely victory when he hit the post during extra time so very well played Aaron Opoku.

Well the Red and Green Army went through a host of emotions tonight but one thing they will have definitely saw tonight was that United sides never give up till the final whistle has blown and we win together and stand in defeat together. PUCU
