Well hello one and all. United tonight find themselves back in action in the Polymac Packaging League Cup Round 3 with a home tie against Quorn AFC. After the disappointment of last Saturdays defeat at the hands of Coleshill Town, United tonight have the chance to put things right with a good performance and hopefully a win.

The referee gets the game under way and United show some early intent when Jack Jeys does well to set up the returning Ben Vallance who sees his shot from outside the area go wide of the target in the 1st minute.

The 2nd minute sees the first yellow card of the evening when the QAFC No8 Nathan Dale is booked for dissent. United have started brightly and win a free kick that’s taken by Craig Reid. His cross finds Aaron Opoku but his header goes wide of the target in the 3rd minute. Another Reid corner in the 8th minute sees Robert Prinzel hook his effort over the bar from 6yrds. More chances soon follow when Aaron Opoku receives the out wide. He proceeds to cut inside before seeing his shot go straight to the keeper Russell Hoult in the 14th minute. Then a free kick on the edge of the area taken by Jack Jeys goes just wide of the target in the 17th minute.

United are carving out plenty of chances but are not putting any away. Let’s hope they don’t live to rue these early chances later on?

More good build up play by United sees Craig Reid played in and in turn forces the QAFC keeper Russell Hoult into making a great save to deny Reid a certain goal in the 20th minute. United finally made a breakthrough in  the 29th minute when Aaron Opoku picked out Craig Reid out wide on the left. Reid does well to get past his marker before shaping up to fire a crisp left foot drive past the keeper Russell Hoult for the opening goal of the game.

That was a neat finish from Craig Reid and just rewards for United’s early dominance. United continue to force the pace and Dominik Alleyne showed some neat skill to control the ball on the byline before sending his shot just wide of the target in the 33rd minute.

QAFC record their first attempt on United’s goal in the 39th minute when the No10 Amarvir Sandhu cuts in from wide on the left and his cross come shot hit the cross bar.

United though are soon back on the attack looking for another goal before half time. They press forward well and Tommy Glasscoe is put through but his powerful drive is magnificently saved by the keeper Russell Hoult in the 40th minute. Russell Hoult is soon called upon again in the 41st minute when he pulls of yet another great save to deny Robert Prinzel from a Craig Reid corner.

The referee soon after blows up for half time with United only having a single goal for all their first half possession.

Second Half

The second half gets under way and United have made a change during the break by taking off Craig Reid and sending on Nathan Cadby.

QAFC have come out this half with a bit of fire in their bellies. They press forward from the start and put United’s Ben Vallance under a bit of pressure. As Vallance tries to clear the ball to safety he is adjudged to have fouled QAFC’s No10 Amarvir Sandhu inside the area and the referee points to the spot for a penalty. The No8 Nathan Dale steps up to take it and duly sends the United keeper Tom Theobald the wrong way to level the tie in the 51st minute.

UNITED 1 QAFC 1

Now that looked a bit harsh on Ben Vallance. It looked like Vallance didn’t touch the player from where I was sitting. Now its game back on and united have to do it all again.

QAFC continue to take the game to United and are forcing United into their own half as QAFC go looking for another goal. They win a free kick on the edge of the area that’s taken by the No8 Nathan Dale. His shot crashes off the post and the loose ball is smashed into the back of the net by the No9 Ryan Evans to put QAFC into the lead in the 55th minute.

UNITED 1 QAFC 2

Well what a turnaround we have here, from 1-0 up United find themselves 2-1 in the space of 4 minutes. United try to respond but an Aaron Opoku long range shot goes well wide of the target in the 61st minute. United decide to make another change when they take off Dominik Alleyne and send on Lewis Rankin in the 69th minute to try and freshen things up a little.

United start to venture forward at last and Jack Jeys cuts inside from wide on the left but his shot is easily gathered by the keeper Russell Hoult in the 75th minute. United soon after make their final change of the evening when they take off Captain Chris Cox and send on Ryan Makwenje in the 76th minute.

The game is nearing the last 10 minutes and QAFC are back on the offensive and the No9 Ryan Evans forces a great save from United’s keeper Tom Theobald in the 79th minute. United respond soon after when they break with Jack Jeys. Jeys cuts into the area before seeing his shot superbly saved by the keeper Russell Hoult in the 82nd minute. It’s not looking like it’s going to be United’s night.

QAFC decide to make a change of their own and take off the No10 Amarvir Sandhu and send on Josh Crossley in the 83rd minute that turned out to be the final bit of action worth mentioning as the clock runs down and the referee blows up for full time and united Bow out.

Full Time

UNITED 1 QAFC 2

In summing up this game I would have to say A GAME OF TWO HALVES. United started the first half brightly and carved out a number of good chances that to be fair were very well saved by a very experienced keeper in Russell Hoult. United’s pressure finally paid off mid-way through the half with a well taken goal from Craig Reid. The continued to create chances but could not put the ball past Hoult.

The second half saw QAFC come out like a different team and went about putting United under a lot of pressure. They won a fortunate penalty early into the half that levelled the scores before going into the lead a few minutes later after more concerted pressure. United battled on but QAFC kept them at bay and continued to create chances of their own right till the end. They managed to see the game out and now progress into the 4th round and good luck to them going forward.

Players worthy of a mention would have to be Russell Hoult for QAFC. His numerous top class saves in this match especially in the first half kept his team in the game so very well played Russell Hoult.

For United, Dominik Alleyene had a good first half especially when going forward until he tired in the second half. Ben Vallance made a steady return into the team with an assured performance and was unlucky to concede the penalty. For me though my man of the match goes to Bobby Moseley. Bobby played in midfield tonight and seemed to revel in the position. He was always looking to get the ball forward and played some lovely balls to pick out his team mates on many occasions so well done Bobby Moseley.

So that’s another game we need to forget rather quickly and hope that the lads can pick themselves up for what’s looking like United’s biggest game of the season on Saturday against Bromsgrove Sporting in the FA Vase Cup. PUCU
