Coventry United FC v Stourport Swifts
Midland Football League Premier Division
Date: Saturday 24th March 2018
Venue: Butts Park Arena
Well hello one and all. At last we have a game of football at home and after the midweek last minute 2-1 victory away at Shawbury United, United will look to continue to climb up the league table with hopefully another victory today.
Today’s opponents at the Butts Park Arena are Stourport Swifts FC who I’m sure will provide United with another stern test. With the fixtures back log meaning games will be coming thick and fast, depths of squads will surely play their parts during the coming weeks.
United’s manager Terry Anderson will have a near full squad to choose from so it will be interesting to see what the final starting line up will be.
The referee gets the game under way and United waste no time in showing their intent. In the 1st minute they see United’s hit man Shaquille McDonald shoot just wide of the target from a neat through ball from captain Kevin Thornton. They keep the pressure on and work the ball forward really well with some precise passing that see’s Frankie Baignet’s shot saved on the line but Shaquille McDonald is on the spot to smash the loose ball into the back f the net for the opening goal of the game in only the 3rd minute.
UNITED 1 SWIFTS 0
That’s a great start for United and so early in the game. The game resumes and United continue to make all the running with some purposeful attacking play. They thought they had increased their lead in the 11th minute from a free kick that saw Robert Prinzel race in at the far post to drive the ball into the net but the flag went up for an offside and the goal was chalked off.
The Swifts first attempt on goal comes in the 13th minute when the No7 Jack Rogers ran clear of his marker before seeing his shot go well wide of the target.
United are soon back on the offensive and force a corner in the 15th minute that’s taken by Frankie Baignet. His cross drops into the six yard box and after a couple of failed attempts to clear, the ball is somehow put into the back of the net by a Swifts player for a messy own goal.
UNITED 2 SWIFTS 0
Well United will settle for that, it makes a change for them to be 2-0 up inside 20 minutes instead of the reversal we have witnessed in recent weeks. United have been really dominant so far in this game and are knocking the ball around with consummate ease.
The game continues in pretty much the same vein with the Swifts only managing a couple of half chances for the rest of the half before the referee blew up for half time.
UNITED 2 SWIFTS 0
The second half gets underway and United have made a change during the break with Jamal Clarke being replaced with Chris Cox. United carry on from the first half with plenty of good attacking play thought they had a great shout for a penalty when United’s Frankie Baignet seemed to be pushed over blatantly inside the area but the referee saw it differently and waved play on in the 50th minute. More good build up play sees United’s Shaquille McDonald shoot straight at the keeper in the 52nd minute. The swifts are finding it hard to get hold of the ball and it’s looking like its only a matter of time before United chalk up another!!!
United decide to make another change in the 61st minute when they take off Tom James and send on Dominik Alleyne. The Swifts follow suite in the 64th minute with a change of their own when they take off the No11 Lewis McPike and send on the No14 Joel Caines.
With the changes done United soon get back on attacking duties and press forward again in the 68th minute. The ball is played in and United’s Kevin Thornton shoots and as the Swift players fail to clear the ball, Shaquille McDonald follows the ball and makes sure it goes in with the simplest of tap in’s to surely seal the points for United.
UNITED 3 SWIFTS 0
United are fully deserved of their lead and now just need to see out the remaining 20 minutes to claim the points and another clean sheet. United though don’t normally shut up the shop and continue to go on the offensive looking for more goals. From a Kyle Carey corner in the 75th minute, Aron Opoku sees his firm header fantastically saved by the Swift’s keeper Dominic Richards.
United decide to make their final change by taking off the once again impressive Kevin Thornton and send on Lewis Rankin in the 77th minute. Then shortly after the Swifts make a double change when they take off the No7 Jack Rogers and No10 Myles Newman and send on the No12 Alex Perry and No16 Ashley Parsons-Smith in the 85th minute.
With the game now into the last 5 minutes, the one and only booking in the game comes in the 89th minute when the No12 Alex Perry is shown the yellow card for hauling down United’s Gift Mussa. That turned out to be the last incident of the game as soon after the referee blew up for full time and United chalk up another welcome 3pts.
UNITED 3 SWIFTS 0
In summing up this game I would have to say SIMPLY LOVELY. United bossed this game throughout and were soon into a 2-0 early lead. They played the ball around with purpose and consummate ease and the Swifts found it hard to see the ball for any length of time.
After the break United continued to boss the game and although the Swifts saw a little more of the ball than they did in the first half, they still couldn’t break down a very stubborn United defence. The points were finally sealed for United in the 68th minute when Shaquille McDonald grabbed his second and United managed see out the rest of the game to claim the 3pts they richly deserved.
Players worthy of a mention would have to be the No6 captain Mathew Fulloway for the Swifts in the heart of a very busy defence on the day.
For United the whole team played their part in what was the best all round performance for quite a while. If I have to mention a few then the new lads in Frankie Baignet and Kyle Carey look great acquisitions to the team and continue to make their presence felt with some great performances. Gift Mussa put in another one of his no-nonsence shifts and just doesn’t stop chasing opponents down. Captain Kevin Thornton also lead by example and is getting better in every game he plays since his return to the club. But for me I have to give my man of the match award to the hit man Shaquille McDonald. The Shaq has been a revelation since his arrival and seems to score goals for fun. He grabbed himself another brace today and on another day could have had a couple more too so very well played Shaquille McDonald.
