Ladies Suffer Narrow Defeat at BasildonDate: 09 April 2018 at 10:21 by Liam Cook
A single goal from captain Zoe Rushen was enough to inflict a fourth league defeat of the season on Coventry United at the hands of C & K Basildon.
An even encounter at Canvey Island ended with the home side victorious, as Rushen bagged her sixth goal in all competitions, spotting United keeper Sue Wood off her line, and chipping the ball into the net. United were far from outclassed, and came close several times in the opening 15 minutes through Ali Hall, United even having an effort cleared off the line. After a slow start following the break, United came to life late on, desperately searching for an equaliser, and again had a goal bound effort cleared off the line. The referee decided the ball did not cross, leaving the players and the Red and Green Army livid.
Despite their heroic efforts in the closing minutes, the Red and Green Girls could not find a way past Basildon keeper Nikita Runnacles, and the points stayed in Essex, leaving Basildon second in the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division, one point behind leaders Crystal Palace, with two games in hand. As for United, they fall to 7th behind West Ham, but still have up to 7 games in hand on teams around them.
