The Dugout: First Team #16

Date: 04 January 2018 at 16:09 by Liam Cook

There’s certainly a lot for CUTV’s Liam Cook and Coventry United Assistant Manager Luke Morton to discuss. On the agenda this week, Luke’s thoughts on the Sphinx defeat, Mitch Piggon’s departure and the upcoming fixture away at Shepshed…

Liam - 2017 didn’t end the way United fans would have liked, but we were treated to a nail biting match between Sphinx and United last time out. It must have been frustrating to lose a game the Red and Greens controlled for large periods?

Luke - It was certainly a frustrating end to 2017. Losing to  a 10 man Coleshill side when we should be doing better, conceding a last second equaliser against Heanor when we should of wrapped the game up way before the end. The Sphinx game is a bitter pill to swallow because I think our attacking play was very good and we dominated large periods of the game, in my opinion, and in several opinions of Sphinx officials we deserved the win. When opposition members say that we deserved the win you know you’re doing something right, but it doesn't help heal the pain of the loss.

Liam - Sphinx got themselves on the scoreboard with their first attempt on goal within the first minute. What goes through the minds of players and coaches in that kind of situation?

Luke - At first you are stunned to concede so early, but you need to get that out your system straight away and think to yourself, there is a long way to go so plenty of time to get back into the game.

Liam - Supporters on the day were split on the penalty decision. After seeing the incident on film, do you believe the referee made the right call?

Luke - I thought it was a penalty at the time of the incident, and once seeing it on video that opinion hasn't changed, It was a silly challenge for Dan to attempt, but he'll learn from that.

Liam - 3 of Sphinx’s 4 goals came from set pieces, a penalty, a free kick and a corner. Set pieces seem to be a real problem for United defenders at the minute, what are the coaching staff doing to remedy this issue?

Luke - All season long we have been trying to correct our frailties at set pieces, but we can't legislate for individual errors. The players themselves need to correct this and cut out the errors, because it's becoming ridiculous now. We as a whole squad need to correct it and correct it quickly.

Liam - First team regular Mitch Piggon left the club in a surprising move last Friday. Any comments on his departure?

Luke - Mitch was excellent for us in the early part of the season, but things change quickly in football. We wish Mitch all the best in his new club and we all move on.

Liam - Defeat at Shepshed on Saturday could see United drop into the bottom half of the table. It would take a monumental run of wins from this position to win the league. Do United have what it takes to mount a serious title push from here?

Luke - We will keep fighting right until the end, but at the minute I think it's important we just take each game on its merit and try our upmost to pick up some momentum and gain as many points as possible.

Liam - And finally, Shepshed have overtaken United in the table, but have failed to beat the Red and Greens in league and cup this season. Will it be a 3rd defeat for Shepshed this weekend?

Luke - Shepshed are an excellent side. They are capable of beating anyone on their day, as they proved when beating Bromsgrove, but we will go there giving our all and hope to come away with all 3 points.
