The Dugout: First Team #23

Date: 08 March 2018 at 12:32 by Liam Cook

This week in The Dugout, CUTV’s Liam Cook quizzes Coventry United Assistant Manager Luke Morton on the 2-1 win at home to Lye, the upcoming trip to Bromsgrove and the new additions to the Red and Greens squad.

Liam - Another successful evening for Coventry United against Lye Town, it’s starting to become a regular thing now. What were your thoughts on the game?

Luke - It was a tough encounter against a good side in Lye Town. There wasn't much goal mouth action, as both teams cancelled each other out for much of the game. I thought Lye actually edged the game overall, but once again our lads showed true grit and determination to come from behind and take all 3 points, which is what it's all about.

Liam  - In both of United’s previous two games, it’s taken a comeback to secure the 3 points. Given United’s determination to turn results around, is it a particularly big deal if the opposition score the first goal anymore?

Luke - It's not ideal that the opposition are getting the first goal, and it's definitely something we don't want to be repeating on a regular basis.

Liam - The long range passing on Wednesday wasn’t perfect from either side. The pitch of course makes playing on the deck tricky, but were you satisfied with the ball distribution? Is it the only option in this situation?

Luke – We’re here to play football, and that's what we'll do. We want to keep the ball on the deck as much as possible, but it's not as easy as that sometimes and it's nothing to do with the surface. Sometimes the opposition tactics force you to go a little more direct than we would like, but it's not a tactic we want to use too much.

Liam - With the horror of the winter weather hopefully behind us, and as United are on a run of 3 wins out of 4, will it be easier to keep this form going now the postponements seem to be a thing of the past?

Luke - Only time will tell that, but the fixtures are going to come thick and fast now, and they are only going to get tougher, so trying to get a run of form going will not be an easy task. I can, however, assure the fans we will be giving everything we can to win every single game we go into, no matter who the opposition are.

Liam - Now the winless streak is well and truly over, has this taken some of the pressure off the players and coaches at the club?

Luke - At any club, at any level, there is some amount of pressure. At Coventry United that is no different, and it's something we embrace and relish.

Liam - Another trip to the Victoria Ground this Saturday, this time against Bromsgrove Sporting. The Rouslers have endured a hectic few weeks, can United take advantage?

Luke - The stuff going on at Bromsgrove will have no effect on the game at all. They are a top side in great form and will be firm favourites going into the game. Our lads will be up for the game and we see it as a challenge to put a dent in their title challenge.

Liam - Three new additions were confirmed this week with Tom Dyche, Frankie Baignet and Kyle Carey all snapped up before the registration deadline. Talk us through the new signings?

Luke - Obviously we needed to bring in a keeper due to Mozza leaving, and we were brought to the attention of Tom by Tamworth, so we stuck him in and so far he has done well. Both Kyle and Frankie are players we have known about for a while, and we see now as an ideal time to bring them in due to the huge fixture congestion we are facing. With only 17 outfield players to choose from we deemed it necessary to add to the squad. From now till the end of the season we will be making changes to the starting line-up, as there is no way any player can play every minute of the games left.

Liam – And finally, have we seen the last of the new additions ahead of the run in?

Luke - I would never say never to bringing in more players, but we are happy with the squad we have, so don't expect anymore signings. On the other hand, expect the unexpected...
